Learning a language is never about quick fixes. The Lightning English system is not only about learning what you need to know, but also the minimal amount of upkeep  you need to do to sustain that learning.

Placement tests that determine whether you are elementary, intermediate or advanced, or where you stand on the CEFR scale, from A1 to C2, can be useful for a curriculum-based teaching approach. Once your level is known, the teacher comes with material designed for that level.

In my experience, the challenges people face in business English on a daily basis are rarely related to their level. There are elementary English users who have no problems functioning in English at work, and advanced users who are afraid to ask a question in a meeting.

As a result, at Lightning English, we focus on skills-based placement. If you want to create groups, it is much more effective to have a group of people from the same department, or with the same goal.

Instead of placement tests, I provide regular feedback on students’ areas of improvement and where they need to focus.
